Jobmath

Markup and margin calculator

Enter any two numbers. Jobmath works out the rest and shows the profit in dollars.

Start with your cost, then add a markup, a margin or a price.

Profit on this job

not setmargin on price
Price = Cost × (1 + Markup)
Margin = Profit ÷ Price

Price the whole job, then bill it

The quote works out the price; the invoice collects it.

Step 1: Quote

Add materials, labor and subcontractors, set a markup for each, and see your profit and margin before you send the estimate PDF.

Build a job quote
Step 2: Invoice

Turn the quote into an invoice in one tap, or start a blank one. Add your logo, a deposit and payment terms, and download the PDF.

Markup needed for a target margin

To keep a given margin, you have to mark your cost up by more than that number.

15%17.6%$1,176.47
20%25%$1,250.00
25%33.3%$1,333.33
30%42.9%$1,428.57

Markup vs margin

Both describe the same profit. Markup divides it by your cost, margin divides it by the price.

Markup
Profit ÷ Cost

Profit as a percentage of your cost. It is the number you multiply your cost by to set a price.

Margin
Profit ÷ Price

Profit as a percentage of the selling price. It is the share of every dollar collected that you keep.

Example: one job
Cost
$1,000
Price
$1,250
Profit
$250
Markup
25%
Margin
20%

A 20% markup gives a 16.7% margin, not 20%. To keep a 20% margin, mark up by 25%. Use the table above, or type the margin into the calculator and it sets the markup.
